Syllabus Structure Under Semester Scheme for the Degree of

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN GEOLOGY

(Two Year Four Semester Course)

Commencing Session: 2007 – 08

************************************************************************************************

Assessment of the students under the semester scheme has the following components: -

(A)              Theory examination at the end of the each semester

(B)              Continuous assessment during the semester

(C)              Marks for students participation/attendance

(D)              Practical examination at the end of even semesters (2nd and 4th semesters)

(E)               Internal assessment

(A)       Theory examination at the end of the each semester: The syllabus for each of the semester is consisted of four theory papers having five units in each of the papers. Hence, the syllabus for the M.Sc. Degree Course in Geology is framed into 16 (Sixteen) theory papers in all.

(B)       Continuous assessment during the semester: The students will also be evaluated in the form of tests and seminars as a part of the continuous assessment. The Mid-Semester Tests of one and a quarter hours duration for each paper for the first two units will be conducted carrying 10 (Ten) marks. The test will be conducted and assessed for each of the papers by the teacher conducting the course. The result of such tests will be declared by the teacher concerned within a week from the date of the tests. The marks of three best tests out of the four conducted and valued will be taken into consideration. Thus the total marks under the heading tests will be 30 (Thirty) marks. The candidate has to obtain 36% marks. If a candidate is unable to secure 36% marks in the tests, he/she will not be eligible to appear in the semester examination. However, such candidate will be given one more chance during the same semester immediately after the declaration of tests marks obtained by him/her. But in all such cases, the letter ‘R’ will be mentioned in their mark-sheet indicating that they have not cleared the tests in the first attempt. No chance will be given for the improvement of the tests result.

(C)       Marks for Students Participation/Attendance:  Each of the students is entitled to obtain marks for his presence/participation in the course it enrolled for. Rules for attendance marks are as following: -

i.                    Three (3) marks if the attendance is between 60 and 65 percent

ii.                  Five (5) marks if the attendance is between 66 and 75 percent

iii.                Eight (8) marks if the attendance is between 76 and 85 percent

iv.                Ten (10) marks if the attendance is above 85 percent.

The candidate whose attendance is less than 60 percent at the close of semester may not be allowed to appear in the examination and he/she would be declared having failed in that semester. (Please see the detailed rules of the university)

(D)       Practical Examination: Two-Practical examinations will be conducted at the end of the Second and Fourth Semesters respectively. Hence, total four practical examinations will be conducted during the M.Sc. Course by internal and external examiners. The details of marks distribution for practical examination and sessional is given in the scheme of examination.

(E)       Internal assessment: The students will be assessed at internal level as follows: -

i.                    Seminars

ii.                  Sessional

iii.                Field-Work/Training Project

i.                    Seminar: All the students have to prepare, present and submit a neatly written or typed copy of a seminar during each of the four semesters. The topic of the seminar to be presented will be decided by the teacher conducting the course or Head of the Department. Each of the seminars carries 10 marks. It will be assessed by the panel of teachers in presence of whom the seminar is presented and submitted. Marks obtained in the first and second semester will be included in the mark sheets of the Second Semester; similarly, marks obtained in the Third and fourth semester seminars will be included in the mark sheet of the Fourth Semesters.

ii.                  Sessional: marks will be awarded on the basis of the following: -

a.      Internal practical tests to be conducted in the Department by two internal faculties for 20 marks (as per topics given in the detailed syllabus).

b.      For the remaining 20 marks; the candidate will be assessed on the basis of punctuality and participation in the laboratory and practical record preparation and submission.

iii.                Field work / training project: All the students have to submit field-work project report. The field-work has to be carried out under the guidance of teaching faculty or under an organization like GSI, MECL, IBM, HCL, MOIL, HZL, Exploration Co./Organization etc. Field work project report will be valued by the faculties suitably. Maximum marks for field work is 40 (forty).
